Food Liability Insurance Program (FLIP) was started with the purpose of serving food service professionals and their business needs. Your specific, food-related business needs are important to us and we are here to help you.
At FLIP, we hope to be a part of a movement to buy food from local farmers, gardeners, and chefs. Product liability insurance is essential to the financial security of farmers market vendors in the 21st century. Often, though, farmers market vendors have trouble finding insurance tailored to their needs at affordable prices.
FLIP supports farmers market vendors by making it easy and affordable for vendors to get insurance. Our policies include general liability, product liability, and business personal property coverage.
We also allow policyholders to add the farmers markets or commercial kitchens as additional insureds at no extra cost.
The Food Liability Insurance Program was created for vendors at farmers markets who want to do business with confidence. Policies can be purchased online in moments, and while we hope that we have provided all of the information you need online, we always have licensed insurance agents standing by during business hours to answer any questions about our insurance program or your policy.

What happens if a customer gets a food-related illness because of food you sold them? They might come to you to pay for medical expenses. Specifically, product liability insurance protects your business in case of injury or damage that was caused from your products.
Aggregate Limit: $2,000,000
At a farmers market you are often moving around your stand helping customers. This means you can’t always be watching everything or everyone at all times. In the case that your equipment is damaged or stolen having food liability insurance with FLIP provides protection to your business/personal property.
Aggregate Limit: $10,000
Throughout the years, you have and will rent spaces at multiple farmers markets. And though you work hard to keep your area clean and damage-free, accidents could happen that result in damage to property you’ve rented. For example, if a fire happens in your rented space causing damage you could be held liable but having insurance that covers premises rented to you can help protect you and your business.
Aggregate Limit: $300,000
Chances are, as a vendor in a farmers market, you will have employees at some point to help you sell your food. However, farmers market liability insurance on its own will not cover job-related injuries your employees might have. FLIP does not provide workers compensation insurance, but our trusted partner Insurance Canopy does.Visit Insurance Canopy’s Workers Compensation Insurance application here.
Farmers market insurance protects food vendors, farmers, and food stands from third-party claims that might arise from their participation in a farmers market. Covered claims may include slip and fall accidents, illnesses caused by food products, or equipment loss.
Farmers market insurance from the Food Liability Insurance Program (FLIP), provides coverage for business personal property/inland marine, general liability, product liability, and damage to premises rented coverage.
A basic farmers market insurance policy from FLIP starts at $299. However, there are additional coverage options that you can add to customize your policy. As a farmers market vendor, you may wish to increase your business personal property coverage amounts or add professional liability coverage for example. You may also need to endorsements such a food trailer endorsement if you haul or sell your products from a trailer.
Yes. When you operate at a farmers market, you are liable if injuries, illnesses, or damages happen due to your business operations.
For example, if a customer gets sick eating your food or if somebody trips and falls over your booth and is injured, you could be held responsible. Claims from unfortunate incidents like these can easily wipe out your business and personal finances and cause your business to close.
In addition, many farmers markets and organizers require all food vendors and farmers to carry them as additional insureds to protect them from your liability.
An additional insured as a person or organization not automatically included as an insured under an insurance policy and who is included or added as an insured under the policy at the request of the named insured. For example, one or more of the farmers markets that you are a vendor at could request to be listed as an additional insured on your policy. This will help protect them in case of an incident regarding your liability at their event. With a FLIP policy, you receive free, unlimited additional insureds. You can add as many as you need in minutes through your online portal.

Read MoreAs a farmers market vendor, you may very well use a food trailer to haul and sell your products. Most general liability policies exclude incidents that occur in, on, or around your food trailer. A Trailer Endorsement covers those exclusions so you do not have to leave part of your work station uninsured. It is important to note that the Trailer Endorsement only covers liability incidents in, on, or around the trailer when the trailer is detached from your towing vehicle and parked on a rented premise. Make sure your vehicle’s auto policy covers the trailer when it is attached to a vehicle; some auto policies may exclude trailers that have license plates or vehicle identification numbers (VIN)
