How does Insurance Work?

At FLIP, we hope to be a part of a movement to buy food from local farmers, gardeners, and chefs. Product liability insurance is essential to the financial security of farmers market vendors in the 21st century. Often, though, farmers market vendors have trouble finding insurance tailored to their needs at affordable prices.

General Liability

Aggregate Limit: $2M

We live in a litigious society and someone could pursue legal action against you. Legal fees can add up to thousands of dollars and it can be a financial strain to deal with. General liability insurance responds to injury and damage that you are legally liable to pay for.

Product Liability

Aggregate Limit: $2M

Food poisoning is every food business owner’s nightmare and you follow best practices in order to prevent it from happening. Sometimes outside variables take over and lead to trouble. A customer could purchase food from you and get sick. Product liability coverage responds to defects that cause injury.

Inland Marine Coverage

Aggregate Limit: $10,000

Running a business requires a lot of expensive appliances and gadgets. These items are at risk of being stolen/damaged and that can be a financial headache. Business personal property/inland marine coverage is designed to protect your movable property and give you a safety net.

Damage to Premises Rented

Aggregate Limit: $300,000

Food preparation is essential and sometimes you need to rent a commercial kitchen to fill orders. Damage to premises rented covers the space you rent and can respond to damage sustained, such as a fire.

Workers Compensation Insurance

Aggregate Limit: $300,000

As a food truck owner, you probably have hired employees to help you on the truck. Through our trusted partner, Insurance Canopy, you can purchase workers compensation insurance.

What Does Food
Trailer Insurance Cover?

The food trailer endorsement only covers liability incidents when the trailer is detached and parked. If you are towing or transporting the food trailer, make sure your vehicle's auto policy covers the trailer. Personal auto insurance may not cover your food trailer if you are using your personal automobile for business purposes. Also, some auto policies may exclude trailers that have license plates or vehicle identification numbers (VIN).

Do I Need
Farmers Market Insurance?

When you operate at a farmers market, you are liable if injuries, illnesses, or damages happen due to your business operations.

For example, if a customer gets sick eating your food or if somebody trips and falls over your booth and is injured, you could be held responsible. Claims from unfortunate incidents like these can easily wipe out your business and personal finances and cause your business to close.

In addition, many farmers markets and organizers require all food vendors and farmers to carry them as additional insureds to protect them from your liability.

What is an Additional Insured
for Farmers Market Vendors?

An additional insured as a person or organization not automatically included as an insured under an insurance policy and who is included or added as an insured under the policy at the request of the named insured. For example, one or more of the farmers markets that you are a vendor at could request to be listed as an additional insured on your policy. This will help protect them in case of an incident regarding your liability at their event. With a FLIP policy, you receive free, unlimited additional insureds. You can add as many as you need in minutes through your online portal.
